Victoria Primary

Welcome to  the Victoria Primary school website

This school website should give you a flavour of the education and experiences we offer at Victoria Primary. In the recent very positive HMIE report (June 2007), our ethos was praised as being very good and the inspectors reported that Victoria had:

“Happy pupils who were developing very good learning skills and a good understanding of equality and fairness.”

Victoria Primary has served the village of Newhaven since 1844. It is the oldest working school in Edinburgh. It plays an important part in the life of the community and we are proud of our history and heritage. We have log books and registers in the school dating back to the 1870s and a display of old school artefacts.

The aim of the school is to offer our pupils a rich variety of learning experiences to enable our pupils to become responsible citizens, successful learners, effective contributors and confident individuals, as outlined in the Scottish Government’s Curriculum for Excellence.

Parents have a vital role to play in the education of their children. Parental interest, encouragement and involvement will enable a child to do better and achieve more than would otherwise be possible. Parents, staff and pupils work together at Victoria Primary to provide a safe, happy environment in which each individual is respected and co-operates effectively.

The school is non-denominational and co-educational, catering for a seven year age

range. Classes are arranged by age. At present there are 5 classes, two of which are

composite.   We have approximately 100 pupils, 6 class teachers, 5 learning

assistants, 1 learning support teacher and an additional language teacher.

The school building is three storeys high. On the ground floor are the Hall, the

Dining Hall, toilets, disabled toilets Head Teacher’s room and School Office. There

are four classrooms on the first floor (the balcony floor) as well as our libraries and

a computer suite with interactive whiteboard and a sensory room. On the second

floor, there are two more classrooms and our Support for Learning room.

The school premises are used by Community groups most evenings. Activities

include Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.
